Well, I pondered the idea of having class starters (bell-ringer) be a Daily 5 or at least a Daily 3 with other course integration. This is what I've started with. I started with a bit on water, favorite foods, and then mostly about apples since September is their national recognition month. With the format, students can place the whole page in the composition notebook or it can be trimmed down to its daily section depending on how you want their INB or binder set up:

Culinary & ELA: Write a sentence about your 2 favorite foods & why they are your faves=

Oh Becca, this is a wonderful idea. I taught elementary you know and before retirement I used the Daily 5 and absolutely loved it. It was the best system I ever used for teaching language arts. I think it could definitely be adapted for running any subject and breaks things up to deal with shorter attention spans of today's youth.
ReplyDeleteYes, I agree, besides bell-ringers, the lesson time could be utilized more in a Daily 5 format: meet with the teacher for a mini-lesson or assessment; do a station(s); required reading passage in a textbook or reference book or non-fiction; do some vocabulary or flash cards kind of small group review....thanks for feedback, Sandy!
